If you need an S3-compatible object storage solution that you control, MinIO is an excellent choice. MinIO is a high-performance, open-source storage system that allows you to self-host object storage on your own infrastructure, whether on-premise or in the cloud.

  • A Domain Name (Optional but Recommended): Using a domain name allows for easier access and management of your MinIO instance. You'll need to configure DNS records to point to your VPS IP address.

2. Update System Packages:

It's always a good practice to start by updating your system packages to ensure you have the latest versions:

3. Install MinIO:

There are several ways to install MinIO. We'll use the official binary for simplicity:

These commands download the MinIO binary, make it executable, and move it to the /usr/local/bin directory, making it accessible system-wide.

To ensure MinIO runs reliably in the background and restarts automatically if it crashes, we'll create a systemd service.

Important:

  • Replace your_minio_access_key and your_minio_secret_key with strong, unique credentials. These will be used to access your MinIO server.

  • The WorkingDirectory specifies the directory where MinIO will store its data. We'll create this directory in the next step.

  • --address :9000 tells MinIO to listen on port 9000. You can change this if needed.
